What is a Counterparty Mismatch?

Wrong counterparty booked: The trade is entered into the system against an entity that was not actually the other party to the trade.

Mismatched details: Both sides may have the correct counterparty in mind, but small differences in the recorded details, such as name, code, or account, cause the records not to match.

Counterparty mismatch: An operational break that arises when a trade is booked against the wrong counterparty, or when the counterparty details recorded by the two sides do not match.

Common Causes

Manual entry errors:
Selecting the wrong counterparty from a list, or mistyping counterparty codes while booking the trade.

Similar counterparty names:
Two entities with similar or related names, such as a parent company and its subsidiary, being confused with one another.

Common Causes

Outdated static data: Counterparty reference details, such as settlement accounts or identifiers, not being updated after a change.

Broker or intermediary confusion: Uncertainty about whether a trade was done directly with a counterparty or through an intermediary acting on its behalf.

Detection and Resolution

Detection: Counterparty mismatches are usually caught during trade confirmation, when both parties compare who they believe the trade was done with.

Investigation: The operations team checks the original order and execution records to confirm the correct counterparty for the trade.

Resolution: The trade is amended to reflect the correct counterparty, and both sides re-confirm the corrected details before the trade is allowed to proceed to settlement.

Risk of Leaving It Unresolved

Settlement failure:
Funds or securities may be directed to or expected from the wrong party, causing the settlement to fail.

Wrong risk exposure:
The firm's records may show exposure to an incorrect counterparty, affecting how counterparty risk is measured and managed.
